How to make a bed from a profile pipe with your own hands - diagram, instructions

Profiled pipe is a universal material. Durable, with relatively low cost and long service life.It is used in many areas of human activity and in the manufacture of furniture, including.

A bed made of profile pipe is one of the popular options bedroom furniture, which does not emit a single squeak during its entire service life, as happens with beds made from other materials.

Drawings and implementation options

There are no strict requirements for beds made of profile pipes. There are certain standards for the beds themselves that must be adhered to when making this piece of furniture. It's all about mattresses and their standardized sizes. Because it is better to buy ready-made than to sew to order to fit the size of the bed structure.

Standard sizes of these products:

  • single: width 80 or 90 cm, length 190, 195 or 200 cm;
  • one-and-a-half-sleeping: width 120 cm, length as in the previous version;
  • double: from 140 to 200 cm with an interval of 20 cm, the same length.

Therefore, before you start making a bed from a profile pipe with your own hands, you need to choose the dimensions of the future place to sleep, taking into account the above parameters. And based on these indicators, make a drawing in which you indicate not only the dimensions, but also the shape of the piece of furniture.

A bed is a prefabricated and dismountable structure, which often consists of 3 parts:

  • mattress frame;
  • 2 backs: one higher than the other or identical.

The last elements of a bed made of a profile pipe can rise above the frame, or they can be flush with it. The last option is economical. It will take less profile pipe to produce.

If the drawing is ready, then you need to put the dimensions of each element on it - carry out the detailing. Dimensional accuracy will help you quickly and efficiently assemble a piece of bedroom furniture without additional procedures - without complicated adjustments.

If some element turns out to be a little larger in size, then it can be adjusted - cut to the required parameter. If it turns out to be less, then this is a defect that will have to be replaced with a new trimmed element. Such expenses will lead to overexpenditure of the profile pipe, which increases the cost of the product.

Cutting a profile pipe is done with a grinder, where the consumable material is a cutting disc. They need to stock up in large quantities. This also applies to electrodes, because the bed elements will be connected to each other by electric welding.

Since the structure made from a profile pipe is collapsible, furniture bolts will be needed to connect the parts - they have a rounded head.

It makes no difference which part you should start making the bed from. But there are 2 options for procuring material:

  1. First, elements are cut, for example, one sidewall. After which it is completely assembled. Next, in the same order, the remaining parts of the bed.
  2. All elements of all 3 parts are cut. Afterwards, each part is assembled separately.

The first option is better, especially for beginners. A large number of cut profile pipes are confusing. You can cut the elements of each part and put them in a certain place so that nothing gets mixed up.

And the last stage in the project is the assembly of a bed from a profile pipe. Its parts are assembled separately according to a diagram using a welding machine. Then they are fixed into one structure using furniture bolts.

What tools and materials will be needed

Tools and consumables:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • hammer;
  • drill;
  • building level;
  • corner;
  • grinding and cutting wheel;
  • drill for the diameter of a furniture bolt;
  • electrodes.

From additional materials:

  • paint (preferably in cans) for metal;
  • metal putty;
  • furniture bolts.

Step-by-step creation instructions

Step-by-step instructions for making a bed from a profile pipe begin with the preparatory stage. To do this, the quantity of required materials is determined strictly according to the drawing: profile pipe, furniture bolts. It is necessary to measure the length of all elements that are summed up. This will give you the total length of the required profile pipe.

But since the design uses pipes of different sections, measurements need to be taken for each position separately. This way the quantity of each element will be known exactly.

Typically, a bed requires a profile pipe with a cross-section of 40x40 or 40x20 mm. It is used for frame and supporting structures. A section of 25x25 or 30x30 mm is used for intermediate elements that create strength and stability.

Frame

The most difficult thing in making a rectangular structure from a metal profile is connecting all the elements at right angles. Therefore, work on assembling a bed frame from a profile pipe must be carried out on a flat surface.

If there is none, then under the corners of the structure you need to place pads or stands with a flat surface. It is better if they are located in the same horizontal plane. Therefore, each profile pipe laid on supports is aligned horizontally using a building level.

Join these elements at an angle of 90º. A construction corner is used for this.

It is impossible to weld the connected pipes with a full seam.First, spot welding is carried out - for tack welding. Then the connection nodes are checked for compliance with the right angle. If everything is correct, then the connections of the profile pipes are welded on all sides with a full seam.

4 profile pipes 40x40 mm cut to size are laid in a rectangle. One joint is tacked - the junction of 2 pipes. To do this, they are docked side by side at a right angle, which is checked with a square.

The remaining elements are connected sequentially along the perimeter of the rectangle. The difficulty may arise at the last corner, which usually does not work out straight. Here you will have to bend the structure, shifting it diagonally.

One tack is made so that the rectangle does not move apart. Afterwards you need to measure the diagonals of the figure. They should be the same. If not, then you will need to shift the structure again. You need to ensure that the diagonals become the same in length.

The next stage is welding all joints with a full seam. There is no need to rush, because the quality of the entire bed depends on the quality of the seam.

It is not necessary to join profile pipes with a 45º cut - it is not so simple. Especially welding. It is easier to make the connection at a right angle - the end of one profile pipe to the wall of the second. The first should be long and located along the bed. The open end of the section will be covered by the sidewall and will not be visible.

To add strength and rigidity to the assembled structure, you need to install cross sections from a 25x25 m profile pipe. They will also become the base on which the mattress will rest.

Although it is better to put a piece of plywood on top, and then a mattress. So the latter will remain in its original state. And the loads from the frame will be distributed evenly.

Bedsores in the form of grooves from the crossbars will not appear on the back of the mattress. This means it will last a long time. Some people use metal mesh instead of plywood, which is also a good option. But plywood, chipboard or OSB are better, even used ones will do.

Welding work on assembling the bed frame

Welding work on assembling a bed frame from a profile pipe has been completed. It is necessary to process the joints, remove sagging and leaks of metal. The first thing you need to do is knock them down with a hammer. The remaining flaws are removed using a grinding wheel mounted on a drill or grinder.

Headboard

Here the shape can be different, but the simplest is rectangular. The headboard consists of 2 support posts and 2 crossbars, the lower of the latter indicating the height of the bed. It is necessary to ensure that the frame is attached to the lower cross member of the sidewall.

To assemble the headboard, you must first select the height of the bed. Standard – 50 cm. But you can choose any size depending on your own fantasies and desires. The same goes for the height of the headboard. Let it be half a meter high. This means that from the lower ends of the racks to the lower cross member, this parameter must be maintained.

On pads on the floor or ground, 4 elements are laid at right angles. As with the frame, the entire structure should be located in the same horizontal plane. Each connection is checked for joining at an angle of 90º and is spot welded. The sequence of operations is exactly the same as when assembling the bed frame.

If the entire structure complies with the specified parameters, the joined elements can be welded with a continuous seam. Afterwards, the metal deposits are removed.

The back side of the bed is made in the same way.It may be the same in size, or it may be smaller, lower in terms of the upper cross member.

Both sidewalls can be filled with intermediate elements from a profile pipe. You don’t have to fill it, and then cover it with another flat material: boards, plywood, etc. The finish offers a huge selection of variations.

Bed

All parts of the profile pipe bed are ready. It is recommended to close the lower ends of the legs. For example, weld squares cut from sheet iron with a thickness of 2.5-3 mm. You can weld furniture wheels, making the bed mobile.

And 2 more stages of assembly:

  1. Make holes for furniture bolts.
  2. Paint the bed.

The first position is simple. To do this, depending on the width of the bed, you need to make several through holes with a diameter of 12 mm in the profile cross-bar pipes: both on the frame and on the two sidewalls. In this case, the holes must be located exactly in the middle of the cross-sectional width of the profile pipe. Quantity – minimum 2, maximum – every 30-35 cm.

Here it is important to accurately mark so that the holes on the frame coincide with the holes on the sidewalls. Errors within 1-2 mm are acceptable, so a hole diameter of 12 mm is drilled for M10 bolts.

The last thing is painting. Even a double bed made from a profile pipe for painting is a small item. Therefore, it is optimal to buy metal paint in cans. 2-3 pieces will be enough.

If areas with rust appear on the profile pipe, then you need to get rid of the latter:

  • sand;
  • treat with a water-based solvent.

Now each element of the bed needs to be painted on all sides. It is difficult to apply paint to the frame in the sense that it is wide and must be turned over so as not to stain or tear off the paint that has already been applied.Therefore, you need to be careful when turning, and it is better to call an assistant.

Bed assembly

First, a few words about furniture bolts, or more precisely, about their length. The design of the bed consists of parts that are made of a profile pipe with a cross section of 40x40 mm. 2 such pipes should be connected with bolts. This means that they must pass through a double profile, the total thickness of which will be 80 mm. And since, in addition to the thickness, you also need to screw a nut onto the bolt and place a washer under it, the length of the fastener must be at least 90 cm.

During the use of the bed, the fasteners become loose, causing it to become loose. The problem can be solved simply - you need to tighten the washers all the way. And it is better to do this periodically, without waiting for backlash to appear. You can simplify the situation by installing Grover washers under the nuts. To do this you will have to increase the length of the bolts.

Now about assembling the bed. First, the frame is assembled from one of the sidewalls. The first one is placed on its side or, as the masters say, on its side. The sidewall is docked to it. It is important here that the mounting holes on the frame coincide with the holes on the side.

It is into them that the bolts are inserted with their heads on the front side. The washers and nuts should remain under the bed. They do screw onto the bolts, but not too much; you don’t need to tighten them all the way with pressure. There should be some play left, which will help when connecting the second sidewall. It is attached to the frame in the same way as the first one.

But now you can tighten the bolts with force so that the parts of the structure do not move relative to each other. At this point, the assembly of the bed from the profile pipe can be considered complete. All that remains is to lay the plywood and mattress on top, make the bed and use it for its intended purpose.

Almost exactly the same way a one-piece bed is made, it is also non-dismountable. Furniture bolts are not used in its manufacture, which means there is no need to drill holes for them. All parts of the bed are simply welded together using electric welding. That is why painting is carried out as the last stage.

For those who cannot work with electric welding, there is an option to assemble a bed from a profile pipe without it. All connections will need to be made using metal perforated angles or other shaped connecting elements and bolts. This technology is often used in the assembly of light metal structures. For example, the option in the photo below.

Compound

The technology is not easy. Here you need to drill a lot of holes, precisely measuring them on the elements to be connected. This is not so simple, and there is always the possibility of displacement and mismatched holes, which leads to difficulties. It is often necessary to re-drill or replace an element or an entire part of the structure.

But, as one of the options for assembling a bed from a profile pipe, you need to know it. In addition, connecting elements are not in short supply - they are on sale, so it’s worth a try if electric welding is too much for you.

Today, furniture made from profile pipes is in trend. And it is not necessary to use it in the loft style direction. Such furniture fits well into any design. It is strong, it can be additionally lined, the price is miserable if you try to do it yourself.

Maybe some of our readers have experience assembling furniture from profile pipes. Voice over how it all happened. It was a bed or a simple bench - everything was interesting.

  1. Love

    I never imagined that I would have an iron bed in my house. At my neighbor's house I saw a couch made of a square pipe. I liked her so much. The master lived nearby, so he didn’t have to go far. I ordered him a bench for the garden. I put a blanket on top of it, it turned out to be a comfortable place. Now there are always disputes over this bench - who will rest on it. After reading your article, I’m thinking about making a bed.

  2. Alik

    I have never assembled a bed from a profile pipe. But all the outdoor furniture in my dacha is made of this material. These include benches, a table with chairs, and in the summer kitchen there are shelves that replace cabinets. I did everything myself, everything was welded, there was no dismountable furniture. Profile pipe is a material that is easy to use, lightweight, and inexpensive. Furniture made from it will outlive me, that’s what I’m counting on.
